The current legislation is the Community Trust Act 1999. The Trust was originally formed to take responsibility for the distribution of profits accumulated by Trust Bank Wellington to charitable organisations in the banks' area.   The Lion Foundation is a charitable trust that exists for the purpose of raising funds for the community. It was established by Lion Nathan in 1985.
