Message from the Junior Co-ordinator
Dear Parent, Coach, Manager, Player
Welcome to all Parents, Coaches, Managers, and players for the 2008/09 season.
Thank you to all coaches and managers for this season. I appreciate the time you will be giving to your junior team. I wish to acknowledge the effort you will be giving to your team and the responsibilities that are already bestowed upon you. This coaching or management position is a crucial role in the development of your junior team. Please understand that this is a role your children will be modelling themselves as not only softballers', but sportsmanship and fairlplay also.
To all junior softball players, I hope your season will be full of enjoyment and you learn more about the game of softball. Safety is important in softball so please ensure you have correct footwear and make sure you wear sunscreen! Don’t forget to make heaps of friends too!
Well done parents for the effort that you already know will be required to ensure your children are at trainings and the games! I hope you enjoy Saturday morning softball with your children. Please be aware that if you are not coaching your children’s team, please support only. A great parent will leave the coaching to the coach.
I will be available to discuss any issues coaches, managers, parents and players may have throughout the season. I am here for you in any possible way I can to ensure you have a smooth and fun softball season.
I look forward to watching great games of Junior Softball this season.
Thank you from the WSA Junior Co-ordinator Megan Rawiri Work: 3861891 Home 232 8060 Mobile 027 4444556 Email: juniors@fastpitchwn.org.nz

Umpiring: Up to U11 grade, Each coach or team umpire must umpire the oppositions turn at bat. For U13 and U15 grades, The home team must provide an umpire for the whole game.
Under 11 grade Pitcher and Catcher are to be rotated every innings.
Batting: The batting innings ends when: 1. Three outs have been taken before the team has scored ten runs 2. A team has scored ten runs.
Drawn games: Games may experience draws if there is a 10:30am game drawn on the diamond you are playing on. If you are in the bottom of the innings at the finishing time of 10:15am (U13) or 10:30am (U15) complete the innings and clear the diamond for the next game as quickly as possible. (Please use common sense: delays to 10:30am games have a flow on effect for the rest of the day) Tie Breaker (Under 13 and Under 15 Grades only) A Tie Breaker applies only if there is “no “10:30am game drawn on the diamond you are playing on. When the Tie breaker rule is applied: • Last batter starts on 2nd base as a runner at the start of the next innings once time has expired (10:15am for under 13’s. 10:30am for under 15’s).
Results chart: The winning team gets two points, or one point for a draw.

4. Player Dispensations Teams may have up to 2 dispensated players approved by their JAB (Junior Advisor Board) for Saturday morning competition. Please note: •A dispensated player may not play pitcher or catcher •A dispensated player may play all other positions including 1st base.
On rare occasions more than 2 dispensated players may be approved by the JAB (only solution a club may have to make up numbers etc). Teams in this position are not eligible for competition points.
5. Mercy Rule To aid enjoyment for all players the mercy rule should be applied as follows: •15 runs ahead at the “completion” of the 2nd or subsequent innings (if leading team are batting in the top of the innings) •15 run's ahead at the start of the bottom of the 3rd or subsequent bottom innings. (if leading team are batting in the bottom of the innings) Please note: •The opposing team must be given the opportunity to bat once a team is 15 runs or more ahead •A team bats through their line up twice with 1 or less batter’s out and are 20 or more runs ahead. Please do not simply finish the game, call the result, if time allows continue on as a friendly (Swap pitchers and catchers for example and have some fun).
6. Obsolete Rule Clarification There have been a couple of old school rules which on occasion have created some confusion on the diamond.
•A batter is NOT out if they drop the bat on home plate •A player may slide to all base’s including 1st base. A player is NOT out if they slide at 1st base •A batter is not out if the ball bounces off any solid object other than a player or their glove after being hit (if the ball hits the fencing, backstop, umpire etc the batter is NOT out).
